The evolution of the IGF in relation to the United Nations Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation
On 11 June 2020, the United Nations Secretary-General issued the Roadmap for Digital Cooperation which addresses how the international community can better harness the opportunities presented by digital technologies while addressing their challenges.
The Roadmap for Digital Cooperation, calls for connecting, respecting, and protecting the online world and presents recommendations to enhance global digital cooperation.
An important area of the Roadmap is related to “Building a more effective architecture for digital cooperation” and suggests few ideas for the evolution of IGF, to make the Forum more responsive and relevant to the current digital challenges. To consider the suggestions indicated by the Secretary General of the United Nations, some new elements have been introduced in the IGF 2021 program but many others innovations could be needed to have a more strengthened and impactful IGF that support “ the effective governance of the digital commons” as recalled by the Secretary General of the United Nations in the “Our Common Agenda” report.
The session entitled “The evolution of the IGF in relation to the United Nations Secretary-General’snRoadmap for Digital Cooperation” will compare views on these aspects, reporting the progress made by the Roadmap for digital cooperation, the new elements introduced in the IGF 2021 program and the role the NRIs may have in this context.
